Camping food ideads

These are just some of the camping food ideas we've come across that make our easy camping recipes and keep us fed while on our motorhome adventures.

The food you take on your camping holiday will depend on a number of factors:

  • do you have to carry your food? - not a problem if you are on a camper van / rv holiday. If you do have to carry your food, going for dehydrated food is a good idea as it will be lighter to carry
  • have you got adequate chilling facilities? - not a problem if you are in your mobile home and have a fridge. If you don't have a fridge or chiller, you will be better off with dried or canned foods
  • what access will you have to shops or markets where you can stock up? - if you are planning on going "bush" you will need to stock up for the duration of your trip but if you are staying in a campsite with a shop or near a town, you can shop everyday if you want. If going "bush", buy food that will last

Dried/Dehydrated Foods

Dried Food

There are many options for dehydrated or dried foods that make delicious camping meals. All you need is water (and sometimes milk) to rehydrate them and make them edible. Some that we have found delicious:

  • Oatmores Instant Porridge - comes in different fruit flavours and you just add boiling water to the container
  • Noodles - these come in a number of flavours and again you just add boiling water
  • Cup of Soup - another great lunch dish and you only add boiling water
  • Continental Macaroni Cheese - you add the contents of the packet to milk and water in a pan and then heat - we love the flavour
  • Rice Mixes - there are several brands of flavoured rice that just need to be added to a pan of boiling water
  • Couscous - this is so easy to make and makes a delicious addition to any meal or is a great lunch dish by itself
  • Pasta - always a great meal. We always a jar of pesto and some parmesan in our fridge to top the pasta and make an appetising meal
  • Surprise Dried Peas - or the Peas and Carrots option. They cook quickly in boiling water and are delicious with sausages and baby potatoes

Canned Foods

Canned Foods

There is a variety of canned foods that are great to take camping, including:

  • Canned Baby Potatoes - so delicious with sausages and peas and salad. A real kiwi camping meal
  • Tuna - we love the cracked pepper and sweet thai chilli flavours
  • Baked Beans - always a staple. Try the chilli flavoured beans
  • Fruit Salad - you can get one person servings in small plastic containers. They are a good snack and a great alternative to fresh fruit

Breads and Cereals

Breads and Cereals

Unless you are on a low carb diet, you will want some carbohydrates, especially if you are active with hiking or kayaking or any of the many other camping activities. These are our bread and cereal camping food ideas:

  • Vogel's bread - it keeps for ages in the fridge and it makes a hearty snack - top with cheese and sprinkle with dried basil and grill
  • Bazaar Roti's (or Tortilla's) - available in the bread aisle of the supermarket - you've heard the ad. Lightly grill or toast these and make a delicious wrap
  • Weetbix - delicious with cold or warmed milk. And the All Blacks have it for breakfast so it must be good :)
  • Muesli - we love Swiss Bircher style muesli - great with yoghurt, milk and blueberries

Fresh Foods

  • Humus
  • Cream Cheese - we buy a light Philadelphia one
  • Cheese
  • Salad - lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, cucumber
  • Vegetables - green and red peppers (capsicums), corn cobs
